Notebooks 3.5 for Mac

Notebooks for Mac 3.5 adds more options to edit documents in external apps, improves support for its Combined Markdown format, allows you to sort the list of search results, and includes many more improvements and corrections.

The update is available from this website and from the Mac App Store. Users of the non-Mac App Store version of Notebooks for Mac can use of Notebooks‘ automatic update option as well.

As always, if you have any questions or feedback, don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

The Changes in Detail

Open With…

The new “Open With…” menu lists all applications capable of handling the currently selected documents. Accessible from the File menu, the document list’s context menu, and the document’s ••• menu, you can choose which app to open a document with.

Markdown

  • “Combined Markdown” documents reliably detect and apply external changes, use syntax highlighting while editing, and more. Combined Markdown documents are saved as HTML, but edited as plain text.
  • Sort the list of search results by title, creation and modification date.

Formatted Documents

  • More dynamically handle the “first line as heading” setting, even when pasting text or editing the first line.
  • Correctly update toolbar buttons when toggling list styles.

Document Themes

  • Default Theme correctly aligns indented ordered lists on screen.
  • Default Theme uses correct font size for numbers in ordered lists.

Documents

  • Documents automatically reload when their font color changes.
  • Address an issue when quickly switching between very long text documents

Misc

  • In the outline, the text colors of empty books is now more readable in dark modes.
  • Automatically clean up and delete unused system files (plist).
  • Improved import from a given URL for better translation of encoded special characters.
  • Inserting a location from position data copied elsewhere more reliably extracts GPS coordinates.
  • Updated HTML to Markdown conversion (markdownify) uses two spaces instead of a tab between list markers and text.
